Today we launched the Social Breakfast workshops at New Heights Cafe in Erdington. The idea of the workshops was to discuss how we can improve the local area, improve skills in Social Media, and understand how we can effectively campaigns and create action.
The event was a massive success, and gave us an insight in to the problems that exist for young people in the Erdington area. Key issues for young people include their frustration around the lack of employment and training opportunities, public transport and the facilities provided for them in the community .
Many young people feel that the high levels of unemployment in the area is the reason that crime exists. They feel that they have little to do, nowhere to go and facilities do not match that of other areas such as Sutton.
It became evident that many people, although out of work are using Taxis to get around, rather than use public transport, as they felt it was overpriced and unsafe. Over the next 2 weeks we will be campaigning to get these points raised with local MP’s and decision makers, in the hope that we can truly make a difference to the local area.
The content from our next workshop at Villa Park wil be featured on the Social Breakfast site, if you know of any issues that you would like to raise in the Erdington area, do let us know we’d love to hear your points.
